What Van Do I Need?

f you’re looking to hire a van for some professional work – or perhaps you simply need a roomier vehicle to move home with – it can be difficult to work out exactly what sort of van you need, especially considering there are various different sizes and specs on offer. In this article, Traffic Self Drive will help you navigate this problem.

A note about driving licenses

People who are looking to hire a van are often concerned about this, but they shouldn’t be: you just need a standard UK driving license to hire and drive a van that weighs under 3.5 tonnes; none of our vans exceed this weight.

Small/Midi Vans

If you want to hire a van for domestic purposes and your current car has little to no boot, then the chances are a small/midi van will do. With a capacity ranging from around 2.5-3.5m³, you will be able to transport personal belongings in this vehicle with relative ease. However, small/midi vans are arguably best for activity-based leisure trips and holidays like hiking and climbing weekends, where extra space is needed for the gear involved, but too much isn’t really necessary.

A typical small van that we offer is the Peugeot Bipper, which is 1.25m long; a typical midi van would be the Peugeot Partner, which is 1.55m long.

Large Vans (SWB/LWB)

With a capacity of around 6-12m³, large vans (short wheelbase and long wheelbase) provide a great deal more capacity than small/midi vans, positioning them perfectly for domestic projects like smaller-scale moving jobs and DIY projects. When you choose Traffic Self Drive, hiring a large van won’t set you back much more than small van (around £15 extra for the day, depending on the van), so if you’re not sure about how much space you need, upgrading isn’t a problem.

A typical SWB van would be our Vauxhall Vivaro, which is 2.7m long; a typical LWB van would be our Peugeot Boxer, which is 3.7m long.

Luton Vans

For the beefiest domestic projects, like large-scale removals and home construction work, a Luton van might be the way to go. With a capacity of around 15m³, you certainly won’t be short of space. Luton vans also come with a tail lift, making it a great deal easier to load and unload items, minimising the heavy lifting that you might find yourself doing with other vans. Unlike other vans, Luton Vans can also seat 3 passengers, which is handy if you are enlisting help.

A typical Luton Van that we offer is the VW Crafter Luton, which is 4m long.
